about

an aural picture of a prairie love affair

lyrics

Standing on the ground Publishing & © Terry Morrison

I was staring at a photograph of a house that you once lived in
The paint was cracked and peeling there were wildflowers in the kitchen
You had sent me 'round the fare so I would come to see you there
And I might lie beside you in the night I would abide with you

Well that summer on the prairies was the hottest they recorded
And the sun it beat our bodies brown while the crickets sang a chorus
And every morning early you'd set the coffee on to perk
Then you'd head off down the road aways
To that place where you were working

But you gotta be standing on the ground to look up in the sky
Or learning how to fly to watch the clouds below slip by
Me I was staring into blue thinking maybe I could love you
But there was something that was missing when we got right down to kissing

I was drifting in a heat filled dream watching flies buzz up against the screen
In my mind I would write poetry for hours I would read books
And the dogs would cast me sideways looks thinking maybe we'd go walking
I said okay lets go pick flowers but they weren't much into talking

And then later in the afternoon I'd get supper from the garden
And I knew that you would be home soon and you'd been working hard
Well We'd crack a couple cold ones then we'd get out the guitars
To Play some new ones and some old ones later gazing up at stars

But you gotta be standing on the ground to look up in the sky
Or learning how to fly to watch the clouds below slip by
Me I was staring into blue thinking maybe I could love you
But there was something that was missing when we got right down to kissing

You were real good company you knew just how to talk to me
But the one thing that you could not see was what I'd left behind
In the town where I was living well my heart it had been given
To a boy who I was running from to try to put him from my mind
I looked into your eyes very deep and very wise
I pulled you close to me I hoped you'd understand
I took your hand and I whispered in your ear “ well I do not belong here”

‘Cause you gotta be standing on the ground to look up in the sky
Or learning how to fly to watch the clouds below slip by
Me I was staring into blue thinking maybe I could love you
But there was something that was missing when we got right down to kissing
You gotta be standing on the ground to look up in the sky
Or learning how to fly to watch the clouds below slip by
Me I was staring into blue thinking maybe I could love you
But there was something you were missing you weren't getting in my kissing
